Lawrence G. Tilley on his website states his aim of reading all one hundred books on The Independent's list of the 100 "Best Books of the Century" and rating each one. I think this is a marvellous idea and, in the tradition of all great innovators, have decided to copy it, although my attempt is rather lacklustre compared to his. (NB: At the time I had started this, I had only previously read nine of the one hundred books on the list. Since that tally was so meagre, I decided to start again and re-read books that I had read before.) Here are the first twenty-five books in the list:
